Cal knew the Reidâs were involved with the robbery at Pioneerâs Inn. They werenât the brightest bunch. Their body language gave them away even if their words were defiant and vague. However, when asked about Courtney Roberts, both Joe and Jim sat up in their chairs uneasily and fidgeted.
Cory Walker was now in the hot seat. He had trouble looking Cal in the eye when answering his questions. Coryâs mother and Calâs were good friends from church. Cory was the youngest of nine children and the only one to give his mother trouble.
Although Cal was well aware of the connection, he wasnât easy on the 19 year old. He asked direct questions about Courtney, and what she had to do with selling drugs. He even questioned him about who was behind the break-in at Pioneerâs Inn.
The last thing Cory wanted to do was rat on his friends. He felt terrible that Courtney was dead. He honestly didnât know who killed her or anything about the drugs. His biggest worry was that they would find out he had taken the big flat screen TV and tell his mother. However, as Cory was leaving the conference room, with his head hung low and speaking so quietly Cal could hardly hear him, he said, âShe was dating Nick Bolen.â Then he looked up making eye contact with Cal. âJust thought you should know,â and left without looking back.
Cal wasnât going to learn anything from Cory or the Reidâs but now he had another avenue to check. Cal turned to Nelsen. âI think we need to pay this Nick Bolen a visit.â
Cal was ready to walk out the door when his phone rang. He looked at it debating whether or not he should let it go to voice mail. Aw-hell⦠âChapman!â He answered.
The womanâs voice on the other end made him glad he decided to answer.
âYes, Rita.â
âI have some good news for you, Cal.â
âThatâs great, Rita. Iâm on my way out now, but Iâd like to stop in and discuss it with you after work. How late are you open tonight?â
âOh, no problem, Iâm open until 8 oâclock.â
âOkay. Iâll stop in sometime before then. Thanks, Rita.â He hung up the phone happier than he should be going to question a suspect.
Nelsen and Chapman met with Nickâs father at B & B Construction. Mr. Bolen wasnât too surprised that the police were interested in speaking with his son. âSure, Iâll get him. Youâre welcome to use the trailer for privacy.â
Which was Mr. Bolenâs way of saying he didnât want the other construction workers to know what was going on with his son.
âThank you Mr. Bolen, but it would be easier for us to speak with your son at the station.â
âAre you arresting him?â
âWe just need to talk to Nick.â
âOkay - should I drive him?â
âIf you wish, Sir.â
Nick was a smart-ass 23 year old punk, who was used to having the world handed to him. His arrogance was stamped on his conduct. Even his father had had enough of his schemes.
